PLA 3D printingThe best all-rounder for models, prototypes and gifts

PLA (polylactic acid) is the most widely printed plastic. It holds fine detail, prints with crisp edges and comes in the widest range of colours, including multi-colour prints. It is made from plant starch and is stiff rather than flexible.

Best for

Display models, figurines and cosplay props
Form-and-fit prototypes and architectural models
Personalised gifts, keychains and name plates
Multi-colour prints and educational models
Desk accessories and indoor organisers

Not ideal for

Parts left in a car or direct sun (softens around 55 °C)
Hot liquids, dishwasher use or engine bays
Parts that must bend or take repeated impact

Tips for ordering in PLA

Choose Standard strength for most models and Light for purely decorative pieces.
Fine (0.12 mm) layers give the smoothest surface for figurines and display parts.
PLA sands and paints well if you plan to finish the part yourself.
